Term 2 Week 10 of 11

Friday, 27th June 2025

Message from the Principal

Dear parents and carers,

It was such a wonderful experience to see our Year 4 students celebrate their first Holy Communions over the last three weekends. Our students were very reverent and looked wonderful in their special communion clothes. A special thank you to Fr. Gerard for leading the Masses and being so caring towards our students on their special occasion.

Thank you to Matthew Dalton for all the preparation, organisation and hard work before the communions and on the day. Thanks to Rosie Nojdek who worked with our Parish children and supported Matt at the communions and in the preparation. It was heartwarming to see the many staff that attended the communions and shared in this experience with our students, families and our parishioners.

This is a great example of the strong bond between our parish and our school and something that we should be proud of.

Just a reminder that next term begins on Tuesday July 22. Monday 21st July is a school closure day. There will be no staff at school that day as we are attending professional learning around faith and spirituality with other local catholic schools on that day.

As we head into the colder months, we kindly remind families to keep children at home if they are feeling unwell. Whether it's a cough, sore throat, fever, or general signs of illness, staying home helps protect classmates, teachers, and other families.

Let’s continue working together to make our school a safe and healthy place for everyone. Your support makes a big difference—thank you!

Best wishes,

Deputy Principal: Learning & Organisation

Wellbeing, Child Safety & Community Leader

Learning Diversity Leader

A big thank you to all the parents and caregivers who took the time to attend PSG (Parent Support Group) meetings over the past two weeks. It was a pleasure to see you and share updates on how your children are progressing with their personalised learning goals, as well as discuss their focus areas leading into Term 3.

These meetings are held each term for students funded under the NCCD categories of ‘Substantial’ and ‘Extensive’, and they play an important role in ensuring ongoing support and collaboration.

I look forward to some additional meetings throughout the term as needed to support individual student needs for children listed under the “Supplementary “category of NCCD funding as required.

Later this week, you will receive your child’s updated Personalised Learning Plan. One copy is for you to keep, and the other will need to be signed and returned to us at your earliest convenience.

One final reminder to please share any relevant reports or letters from your child’s paediatrician, psychologist, speech therapist, occupational therapist, or other specialists. This may include sensory profiles, cognitive assessments, or similar documentation. These reports are incredibly valuable in helping us develop meaningful Personalised Learning Plan (PLP) goals and ensure we are providing the best possible support for your child. You

God is here.

He is present in the Eucharist and alive in us!

During the last 3 weekends and over 9 weekend Masses, we celebrated both our students and Parish program communicants who received the Sacrament of Eucharist for the first time. We welcome these students to the gift of the Eucharist, and we sincerely thank families for their ongoing support throughout this Sacramental journey and for supporting their child as they continue to grow in Christian faith.

Receiving Jesus for the first time is a momentous occasion that was beautifully shared with the wider Resurrection Parish community. May the children’s First Communion be the first of many!

I would like to echo Adrian’s earlier sentiments.

Thank you, Father Gerard, for his leadership and pastoral care he provides for the children of Resurrection Catholic Parish. We are blessed to have you!

Thank you to Mrs. Melanie and Mrs. Rachael from the Parish Admin team for their arduous work in the preparation of these Sacraments. Everything ran so smoothly because of your efforts.

Thank you to Rosie Nojdek, who worked with our parish children, and to our Year 4 teachers, who spent several weeks helping prepare the students to understand the Sacrament.

And finally, to the parishioners of Resurrection. Thank you for being so kind, supportive and caring towards our children. You certainly made them feel welcomed in the parish community!

Eucharist Reflection Day

On Tuesday, the Year 4 students had a Eucharist Reflection Day. This day was facilitated by the Gen Bryant Team. They used games, songs and dance to further teach, empathise and remind the students of the Sacredness of the Sacrament.

SUNDAY GOSPEL

This Sunday’s reading is from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew 16:13-19

You are Peter, and I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi he put this question to his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say he is John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ ‘But you,’ he said, ‘who do you say I am?’ Then Simon Peter spoke up, ‘You are the Christ,’ he said, ‘the Son of the living God.’ Jesus replied, ‘Simon son of Jonah, you are a happy man! Because it was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. And the gates of the underworld can never hold out against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven.’

Gospel Reflection

Throughout most of its history, the Church has linked the two major figures of Peter and Paul, so it is fitting that they share this feast day. However, also throughout most of the Church’s history, Peter has been given greater regard and has held a more significant place in the tradition. In fact, the Church itself is often described as ‘Petrine’ – in the tradition of Peter. Much is made of the line of Popes being traced back to Peter. The authority and structure of the Church is linked to the Petrine model of Church. Describing Peter as the ‘rock’ upon which the Church was built is an excellent image of stability and constancy.

In something of a contrast, the apostle Paul is best known as the great traveller who spread the message of Jesus all around the shores of the Mediterranean, establishing communities of faith wherever he went. His letters – or epistles - to these communities were some of the first Christian writings; predating by 20 years or more the four gospels of the New Testament. Rather than stability and constancy, Paul is identified with growth and change; expansion and openness. Many would argue that without Paul the early Christian communities may not have survived beyond the end of the 1st Century.

Peter and Paul represent two great traditions within the Church: the strength of tradition and oneness associated with Peter; and the valuing of new ideas and outreach to others that typified the work of Paul. Although the Petrine tradition has been dominant for most of the Church’s history, the Pauline tradition was rediscovered in the latter part of the 20th Century and it is now clearly evident that the church needs both of these arms to embrace the world.

Scriptural Context

When the gospel writer has Jesus declare that he will give to Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven, he is quoting almost directly from a verse in Isaiah, ‘I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.’ (22:22). The passage in Isaiah is about the appointment of a steward – a caretaker – for the people of Jerusalem. It makes clear that the one appointed carries the authority of the Lord who appoints him. When almost the same words are used about Peter, it carries the meaning from its original context.

Living the Gospel - Who do you say I am?

The question Jesus puts to his disciples is the very same question that he puts to us every day of our lives, ‘Who do you say I am?’ How we choose to answer that question will be reflected in our attitude towards self, others and to life itself. How we answer that question will change frequently throughout life as experience and changing spirituality lead us into asking other questions of ourselves. If we hold that the teaching and example of Jesus are important to us, then we are bound to strive towards emulating them in our own lives.

Different View – Stone or Rock?

An argument exists about the translation of the naming of Peter as the rock on which the Church will be built. In Greek, the line can be translated as ‘you are a small stone and on this large rock…’. In this argument, the role of Peter is diminished but the large rock referred to is either Jesus himself or Peter’s declaration of faith. However, in Aramaic (spoken by Jesus) the word Kepha or Cephas is used for both Peter’s name and the word for rock. Those who seek to diminish the role of the papacy in the Church will argue about the translation of this line.
