LEARNING & TEACHING: SPECIALIST
The specialist classes at Resurrection are Performing Arts, Visual Arts, STEM, Japanese and Physical Education.
Performing Arts
The Performing Arts program at Resurrection is a vibrant and integral part of our school community, focused on nurturing students’ creativity, confidence, and enjoyment of music, drama, and dance. Our program provides a wide range of engaging experiences that help students develop important musical skills and knowledge, including beat, rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony, expression, tone colour, style, form, theory, and history.
From early years, students participate in singing, dancing, moving, playing percussion instruments such as xylophones, metallophones, drums, maracas, tambourines, and more. In Grades 3 to 6, students have the opportunity to learn to play the ukulele and recorder, building their instrumental abilities and enriching their musical understanding both individually and as part of group music-making activities.
Music plays an important role in our school’s liturgical celebrations, with students learning and performing songs for school masses and special events. This helps strengthen the spiritual and community life of Resurrection through meaningful musical participation.
A key highlight of the Performing Arts program is the annual Grade 6 musical theatre production, where students showcase their talents in singing, dancing, and acting. This full-scale production includes costumes, stage makeup, scenery, and props, offering students an immersive experience in theatre arts and fostering teamwork and self-confidence.
Our school also features two upright pianos located in the central courtyard, providing students with opportunities to freely explore and express their musical talents during breaks, creating a lively and creative atmosphere throughout the school day.
At Resurrection, the Performing Arts program enriches student learning by inspiring creativity, collaboration, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
Visual Arts
The Visual Arts program at Resurrection Primary School is designed to encourage and challenge students to reach their artistic potential in a supportive and enjoyable environment. Our program offers students many opportunities to express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas through a wide range of media. Throughout their time at Resurrection, students experiment with materials such as paint, collage, clay, drawing tools, construction materials, and textiles. They also explore and respond to artworks by well-known artists, developing their creativity and critical thinking.
Central to our program is the study of the elements of art—colour, value, line, shape, texture, space, and form—as well as the principles of art, including contrast, repetition, pattern, emphasis, balance, movement, rhythm, and unity. These concepts guide students in creating and understanding art.
All students participate in a weekly one-hour Visual Arts session in a well-equipped, spacious classroom that fosters creativity and collaboration. In Foundation to Grade 2, the focus is on experimenting with materials and expressing individual creativity, with opportunities to share and discuss their work. From Grades 3 to 6, students build on these skills with increased emphasis on technique and artistic communication, while also discussing famous artworks and those of their peers.
Beyond formal classes, students can join the drawing club during recess and take part in the annual art logo competition to design the school’s Art Show logo. The Visual Arts program at Resurrection plays an important role in developing imagination, skill, and a lifelong love of art.
STEM
STEM—standing for Science, Technologies, Engineering, and Mathematics—is a relatively new specialist subject offered at Resurrection, designed to provide students with hands-on learning experiences that develop their knowledge and skills across these interconnected areas. At its core, STEM encourages students to explore and understand the world around them through practical investigation, creativity, and problem-solving.
All students from Foundation to Grade 6 attend a weekly one-hour STEM session in a dedicated STEM room, equipped with a wide range of resources including science kits, construction materials, Bee-Bots, traditional and robotic Lego kits, iPads, Micro:bits, green screen equipment, and a 1:1 Chromebook ratio. This rich environment supports active learning and exploration.
During STEM lessons, students engage in the design process by identifying problems, investigating, designing, constructing, testing, and reflecting on their solutions. This approach helps them develop critical thinking, collaboration, and innovation skills.
In Grades 5 and 6, students participate in the STEM Aviation program, where they design, build, and fly prototype model aircraft, applying their learning in a real-world context. Additionally, students have the opportunity to compete in STEM MAD, an annual expo organised by Melbourne Archdiocese of Catholic Schools (MACS), showcasing their projects and creativity.
Resurrection is proud to offer a STEM program that inspires and prepares our students to become the future scientists, engineers, and mathematicians who will shape the world.
LOTE - Japanese
At Resurrection, all students from Prep to Grade 6 learn Japanese, with a focus on developing comfort and confidence in another language and gaining an appreciation for Japanese culture. Rather than aiming for full fluency, the program uses games, songs, and stories to make learning fun and meaningful. The curriculum is carefully linked to classroom Inquiry Units, promoting connections across subjects wherever possible.
From Prep, students begin learning the Hiragana phonetic script, gradually building their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills as they progress through the grades. In Grades 5 and 6, there is a stronger emphasis on reading and writing Hiragana, aligning with the Victorian Curriculum and preparing students for secondary school language learning.
To enrich learning, native Japanese speakers sometimes visit classes, providing authentic cultural experiences that foster empathy and deepen students’ understanding. Additionally, students in Grades 1 to 6 have opportunities to communicate with Japanese peers via Zoom at least once a year, enhancing their language skills and global awareness.
Since 2022, Resurrection has proudly maintained a formal sister school relationship with Tsutsujigaoka Primary School in Nabari, Japan—a city in Mie Prefecture known for the delicious sweet, Akafuku, made from mochi and red bean paste. This partnership allows both school communities to build cultural connections and expand their outreach through ongoing collaborative activities.
Through this vibrant Japanese program, Resurrection students develop language skills, cultural empathy, and global friendships that enrich their educational journey.
Physical Education
At Resurrection Primary School, we are committed to creating a Physical Education program where every child feels valued, included, and motivated. Our P.E. curriculum is intentionally diverse to ensure that all students find enjoyment and success, making their physical education journey positive and rewarding.
Through innovative activities and expert instruction, the program encourages students to develop essential motor skills, coordination, and sportsmanship. Tailored to meet the needs and interests of students at all levels, our curriculum goes beyond exercise—it aims to ignite a lifelong passion for movement while fostering teamwork, resilience, and personal achievement.
Senior students have opportunities to participate in interschool and district sporting events, allowing them to excel athletically while building camaraderie and representing Resurrection with pride. Meanwhile, junior students take part in an intensive two-week swimming program led by certified instructors, focusing on water safety, swimming techniques, and boosting confidence in the pool.
As a community, we come together annually for the Athletics Carnival, a fun and spirited event celebrating participation, teamwork, and healthy competition. From sprinting to long jump, students of all ages showcase their talents and sportsmanship in a day filled with excitement and school spirit.
At Resurrection, our Physical Education program supports students in developing physical skills, positive attitudes, and a strong sense of community.
