LEARNING & TEACHING: MATHEMATICS

At Resurrection Primary School, we believe that Mathematics is a vital life skill that helps students understand and interact with the world around them. Our Mathematics program aims to develop confident, curious, and capable learners who can think logically, solve problems, and apply mathematical understanding in real-life contexts.

Aligned with the Victorian Curriculum

Our Mathematics teaching and learning is guided by the Victorian Curriculum: Mathematics, which is structured across three key content strands:

  1. Number and Algebra – developing skills in number sense, operations, patterns, and relationships

  2. Measurement and Geometry – understanding shape, space, measurement, and spatial reasoning

  3. Statistics and Probability – collecting, interpreting and analysing data, and exploring chance

These are supported by the four Proficiencies:

  • Understanding

  • Fluency

  • Problem-Solving

  • Reasoning

These proficiencies are embedded in our teaching to help students make connections, work efficiently, and think critically.

Our Approach to Mathematics

We use a balanced and evidence-based approach to Mathematics, where students learn through:

  • Explicit teaching of concepts and strategies

  • Hands-on, practical learning experiences

  • Open-ended tasks and real-world investigations

  • Use of manipulatives, digital tools, and visual representations to support understanding

  • Mathematical conversations to build reasoning and language

We cater for diverse learning needs through differentiated instruction, small group work, and targeted support. Regular assessment informs teaching and helps track each student's growth and achievement.

Building a Growth Mindset

We foster a growth mindset in Mathematics—encouraging students to see mistakes as part of the learning process, to persevere through challenges, and to enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes from problem-solving.

Family Engagement

Families play an important role in supporting Mathematical thinking at home. We encourage parents to:

  • Engage in everyday maths activities (e.g. cooking, shopping, measuring)

  • Play games that involve logic, numbers, or strategy

  • Talk positively about Maths and promote persistence

  • Participate in school maths workshops and learning events
