STUDENT WELLBEING: SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING
At Resurrection Primary School, we recognise that a child’s social and emotional development is just as important as their academic progress. To support the growth of the whole child, we embed Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) throughout our curriculum and daily school life.
What is SEL?
Social and Emotional Learning is the process through which children (and adults) learn to:
Understand and manage their emotions
Set and achieve positive goals
Show empathy for others
Build and maintain positive relationships
Make responsible and caring decisions
These life skills are essential for students’ success both in and out of the classroom.
How we teach SEL at Resurrection:
At Resurrection, SEL is taught explicitly through:
Dedicated SEL lessons in the classroom
The 4 Zones of Regulation framework (helping students identify and manage emotions)
Restorative practices to resolve conflict respectfully
Class discussions, storytelling, and role-play
Whole-school approaches such as Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Staff modelling respectful, caring, and consistent behaviour
We also weave SEL into all areas of learning, including literacy, health, religion, and even safe play areas (quiet play, passive play, sensory room, buddy zone).
Why SEL Matters
Research shows that strong social and emotional skills help children to:
Improve focus and academic performance
Build resilience and cope with challenges
Work well with others
Develop confidence and a strong sense of self
Reduce anxiety and behavioural issues
At Resurrection, we believe SEL is not an “extra”—it’s essential. By supporting children socially and emotionally, we help create a safe, caring and connected school environment where everyone can thrive.
