Term 2 Week 6 of 11

Friday, 30th May 2025

Message from the Principal

Dear parents and carers,

As we continue the journey towards our PBL refresh for Term 3 I will continue to write about this in our newsletter. As you would remember in last week’s newsletter, I highlighted our Positive Behaviour Matrix, the list of all the expected positive ways our students are expected to behave and act in our school.

These were listed under the headings of being:

  • Respectful

  •   Responsible

  •   Resilient

In this week's newsletter I wanted to focus on how these positive ways of acting will be taught and importantly learnt in our school. We can't just expect children to conduct themselves in certain ways, this needs to be taught at home and in school as well. All children are on a journey of growth and development, and we are passionate about helping them along this journey.

Beginning next term, as a whole school, we will be focussing on the following parts of our positive behaviour matrix in two weeks blocks. For Term 3 we will focus on:

  • Introducing the PBL changes

  • Listening and Following Directions

  • Keeping Hands Feet and Objects to Ourselves

  • Persist, Takes Risks with my Learning and Challenge Myself

This will be taught weekly in class and discussed in our school assemblies.

Teachers will be discussing the positive behaviour using examples of when it is done well and discussing the rules that are broken if it isn't done well. We, as a school will also be focussing on ways and methods to help children to follow these expectations, such as, how to ask for adult help, how to calm our emotions before acting on impulse and how to use our words to solve conflict.

One of the main ways to teach children is through what we call social stories. These are set out in child friendly language and are a way of explaining the expected behaviour through words and photos. I think these social stories provide a great way that parents can work with their children at home and talk about what is being taught. I plan to send a link to each social story in newsletters next term so these conversations can take place. Most times there is a Prep to Year 2 (Junior) and Year 3 to Year 6 (Senior) social story. Parents just need to go through the social story and discuss it and what this looks like at home and at school.

Let’s practice this week and I’ll add a social story about listening and following directions. We can do this one a second time in Term 3 when it is taught in class.

Junior Social Story

P-2 I can listen to and follow the instructions of all staff

Senior Social Story

3-6 I can listen to and follow the instructions of all staff

On another note, it was wonderful to see many of our children and their families at Mass on Sunday. What a wonderful example this is of our school and parish coming together to celebrate our faith.

Best wishes

Deputy Principal: Learning & Organisation

Semper Dental

We are pleased to advise you that our school has engaged Semper Dental to provide your children with the opportunity of visiting the Semper Dental treatment team at school commencing on Monday June 2nd.

Semper Dental is a well-respected Catholic family business and is a significant provider of oral hygiene education and dental treatment services with programs running in more than 80 schools in greater Melbourne.

The program is available to participating students from all year levels at the school. The basis of this offer will be fully explained in the Semper Dental parent consent forms and in the Semper Dental information flyer.

Semper Dental provides a preventative treatment program involving an oral examination and treatments such as scale, cleaning, fluoride application and fissure seals were necessary.

Semper Dental will then provide you with a treatment plan for your child following the visit and will inform you if your child requires additional dental care.

Learning Diversity

If your child requires support from allied health professionals such as a Paediatrician, Occupational Therapist, Speech Therapist, or Psychologist, and a school visit or observation is needed, I kindly ask that you notify the school in advance.

To ensure clear communication and coordination with our staff, please feel free to pass on my email address to any relevant professionals involved in your child’s care. This will help us ensure that all appropriate parties are informed and prepared for their visit.

They can contact me directly at: vkulkewycz@rskingspark.catholic.edu.au

As we move closer towards the end of term, I look forward to meeting more parents for PSG’s on Tuesday 10th 11th and 12th  June. Please check your Operoo for a notice and click the link to the interview bookings.

Please note that As Mr Coaley has left, I will be unable to host meetings for the students in his class until term 3. If there is anything of importance in the meantime, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for your cooperation and ongoing support.

Using Zones Of Regulations at home

How can you help your child use The Zones of Regulation?

  • Identify your own feelings using Zones language in front of your child (e.g. “I’m frustrated, I think I am in the Yellow Zone.”)

  • Talk about what tool you will use to be in the Zone (e.g. “I need to take 4 deep breaths to help get me back to the Green Zone.”)

  • At times, wonder which Zone your child is in. Or discuss which Zone a character in a film/book might be in (e.g. “You look sleepy, I wonder if you are in the Blue Zone?)

  • Avoid having a talk to your child around Zones when they are in the Red Zone. remind them about a strategy that might help but leave the talking when they are calmer.

  • Teach your child which tools they can use (e.g. “It’s time for bed, let’s read a book together in the rocking chair to get to the Blue Zone”).

  • Share how their behaviour is affecting your Zone. For example, if they are in the Green Zone, you could comment that their behaviour is also helping you feel happy/go into the Green Zone.

  • Praise/encourage your child to share which Zone they might be in.

As part of our learning about the Zones of Regulation, we encourage children to choose ‘tools’ to go in their toolkits. It is important to note that everyone experiences all the Zones – the Red and Yellow Zones are not the ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’ Zones. All the Zones are expected at one time or another.

As part of our Living Things unit, the Preps had the chance to explore Animal Land in Diggers Rest—and they had the most amazing time!

From pony rides and milking a cow, to churning butter, feeding alpacas and sheep, and cuddling baby animals, the day was packed with hands-on fun. The students also loved spotting the piglets and bouncing along on a tractor ride around the farm.

On top of all that, they planted their own sugar snap pea seeds and joined in some fun farm games. It was such a fantastic day full of laughter, learning, and new experiences. The Preps came back buzzing with excitement and a whole new appreciation for living things!

SUNDAY GOSPEL

This Sunday’s reading is from the Holy Gospel according to luke 24:46-53

While blessing them, he was taken to heaven.

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You see how it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses to this.

‘And now I am sending down to you what the father has promised. Stay in the city then, until you are clothed with the power from on high.’ Then he took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. Now as he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven. They worshipped him and then went back to Jerusalem full of joy; and they were continually in the Temple praising God.

Gospel Reflection

The author of the gospel of Luke is also recognised as the author of the Acts of the Apostles. The works are regarded as originally being intended as a two-volume single work sometimes referred to as Luke-Acts. Their separation occurred in the development of the canon of the Bible. In today’s gospel and first reading we get the very end of the first volume and the very beginning of the second volume of the Luke-Acts work – the very point of intersection between the two books. The gospel of Luke is the only one of the four canonical gospels that describes the Ascension of Jesus and, to reiterate it, the writer begins with the same event at the beginning of Acts.

If we regard the two volumes of Luke-Acts as a single work, we see the events as all part of the one story. The life and ministry of Jesus is only the first half of the story. The story continues through the Book of Acts as the disciples and believers enter into a new way of witnessing to the ministry of Jesus – attempting to take on that ministry themselves and spread the message even further than Jesus was able to do in his life. Seen in this light, the gospel account of Jesus’ ministry establishes a model and a pattern for the ministry that the followers of Jesus seek to emulate in their own lives after his Ascension. The Ascension is the pivotal event between the two volumes but it was also the pivotal event in the ministry of Jesus. The Ascension, and the subsequent events of Pentecost, was essential for the shift in emphasis from the ministry being carried on by Jesus to the same ministry carried on by millions of people throughout time.

Scriptural context - Luke - Acts

The two works of Luke and Acts, ascribed to the same writer, are both addressed to the same person, Theophilus. However, the Greek name, Theophilus, means ‘Friend of God’ or ‘Beloved of God’. Theophilus may have been a particular person or may have been a literary device by the author – using the name to imply that the books were written to any ‘Friend of God’. There is a common style employed in the writing of the two works and a common theology runs through both works and it is these commonalities that lead scholars to conclude that the two works share the same author.

Gospel Focus - A message for all People

One of the defining features of the Gospel of Luke is the fact that the message preached and practised by Jesus made salvation available to all people. At times in the gospel some of the Jewish audience became quite angry at Jesus because he said that pagans and gentiles were also included in the salvation he promised – something they regarded as exclusive to the ‘chosen’ people. The two accounts of the Ascension make very clear that the message and ministry of Jesus are to be carried to all nations – even to the ends of the earth!

Living the Gospel - You will be my witnesses

Organisers of the twenty-third World Youth Day hosted by Sydney in 2008 took as its theme verse 8 of the passage from Acts 1 that is today’s first reading: ‘You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my witnesses.’ The choice of this theme for a worldwide gathering of young people of faith is a significant reminder of the call of Jesus to go out to the ends of the earth and to bear witness to his message. These are the final words on earth attributed to Jesus and they echo to us through time.
