Term 2 Week 5 of 11

Friday, 23th May 2025

Message from the Principal

Dear parents and carers,

I hope this newsletter finds you well. The transition from summer to winter has happened really quickly and the mornings are getting cold.

As mentioned in previous newsletters we are refreshing our PBL policy, procedures and protocols with a start date of the day of the first day of Term 3. In the remaining newsletters for this term will be discussing our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) approach. On the next page is our PBL matrix. This is the one part that has not changed. The PBL matrix lets our children know the expected way to act at our school. It’s written in a positive way under the three headings of:

  • Respectful

  • Responsible

  • Resilient

These are the expected ways our students are to conduct themselves at our school.

 Examples of this are:

  • under the heading of Respectful -to listen to and follow the instructions of all school staff

  • under the heading of Responsible -to move safely

  • under the heading of Resilient- to help myself by trying my best

These expectations can look different for a Prep compared to a Year 6 but the basic expectation remains the same. I’m a big believer that these expected behaviours cannot in fact just be expected but need to be taught. We have developed new lessons and social stories to teach these expected behaviours on a regular basis with our students. There is also a lot of teaching to be done around factors that stop a student following the rules such as dealing with problems with other students, controlling emotions and who to go to for help. Each fortnight the whole school will focus on an expected behaviour. More to come next week.

It is with gratitude that we farewell Joss, who has been such a valued member of our Resurrection community. His dedication, kindness, and strong commitment have made a lasting impact, and we are truly thankful for his time with us.

As Joss embarks on his new journey at Holy Trinity, we send our heartfelt best wishes for this next chapter. May it bring him joy, success, and fulfillment.

Looking forward to seeing you all at our school Parish Mass at 10.30am on Sunday.

Best wishes

Deputy Principal: Learning & Organisation

National Simultaneous Storyline

On Wednesday 21st May, our students engaged in National Simultaneous Storytime where they read the picture story book ‘The Truck Cat’. What a wonderful way to celebrate the joy that is reading!

Have a look at some of the fun activities that took place on Wednesday!

Semper Dental

We are pleased to advise you that our school has engaged Semper Dental to provide your children with the opportunity of visiting the Semper Dental treatment team at school commencing on Monday June 2nd.

Semper Dental is a well-respected Catholic family business and is a significant provider of oral hygiene education and dental treatment services with programs running in more than 80 schools in greater Melbourne.

The program is available to participating students from all year levels at the school. The basis of this offer will be fully explained in the Semper Dental parent consent forms and in the Semper Dental information flyer.

Semper Dental provides a preventative treatment program involving an oral examination and treatments such as scale, cleaning, fluoride application and fissure seals were necessary.

Semper Dental will then provide you with a treatment plan for your child following the visit and will inform you if your child requires additional dental care.

Forms need to be returned to the school by Wednesday May 28th.

Wellbeing, Child Safety & Community Leader

At Resurrection, we are teaching and using ‘Zones Of Regulations’

1 . What are the Zones of Regulation?

The Zones of Regulation is a framework organised around four colored Zones YELLOW, BLUE ,RED & GREEN. These colours help us to describe and manage our feelings, energy, and emotions. It teaches SELF REGULATION!

Blue Zone (Low Energy, Sad, Tired, Bored):

  • Description: Children in the Blue Zone may feel sad, tired, or bored. They may experience low energy levels, and difficulties focusing or engaging in activities.

  • Regulation Strategies: Encourage activities that promote relaxation and calmness, such as deep breathing exercises, taking a break, or engaging in soothing activities like drawing or listening to soft music.

Green Zone (Good to Go, Happy, Calm):

  • Description: Children in the Green Zone may be calm, focused, and able to regulate their emotions. They are ready to learn and participate in activities.

  • Regulation Strategies: Reinforce positive behaviours and coping skills. Encourage them to continue what they are doing and maintain their emotional experience through activities they enjoy.

Yellow Zone (Frustrated, Worried, Silly, Nervous):

  • Description: Children in the Yellow Zone might experience heightened emotions such as frustration, worry, or excitement. They may have lost some control over their ability to regulate their emotions.

  • Regulation Strategies: Help the child identify their feelings and use coping strategies like deep breathing, counting to ten, or talking to a trusted adult. Encourage problem-solving and teach them how to recognise what is triggering them.

Red Zone (Angry, Aggressive, Terrified, Out of Control):

  • Description: Children in the Red Zone are overwhelmed by intense emotions like anger, aggression, or extreme fear. They are in crisis mode and may have difficulty thinking clearly.

  • Regulation Strategies: Ensure safety first. Help the child calm down through techniques like taking deep breaths, using a stress ball, or finding a safe space to cool off. Offer support and reassurance, and when they are ready, discuss what triggered their emotions and other ways to respond.

    2. Why is SELF REGULATION important to learn?

It means you are in control and having management of your emotions & behaviour.  Sometimes we need support and assistance in this area.

3. Which colour Zone is the best zone to be in?

While we prefer the GREEN ZONE - There is no "best" zone in the Zones of Regulation. Each colour represents a different emotion, all of which are important depending on the situation or experience. What’s important is that you realise the zone you are in and choose a strategy to self-regulate.

Goodbye From Mr Coaley

This week marks my last week at Resurrection Primary School. I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank the amazing students, families, teachers and leaders that I have had the pleasure of working with over my time at this amazing school.

I have seen the school on an amazing journey since I began in 2021, and we now live in very different times from when I met the staff on a Google Meet during COVID times. Since then, I was able to teach our Senior Students STEM, been a Learning Diversity coordinator, taught four amazing Year 3 classes and been the Middle School Level Leader.

I wanted to thank Des Noack, Adrian Glasby, and their Leadership Teams, for the trust that they have placed in me to be a leader of the school over the years. I also wanted to thank Adrian and Jess Davis for providing me the opportunities to work in many different Wellbeing and Learning Diversity initiatives which has grown my passion for supporting all students to receive the best education possible. I would also like to thank Fr Gerard for his support and guidance throughout my time at this school.

To the staff at Resurrection, thank you for the gift of laughter, of support, and collaborating together! Our Middle School Team has changed over the years but everyone has brought their own strengths and smiles to the team, working together to create the best learning opportunities for our students. I want to thank everyone, past and present, that worked together to make such an amazing and successful Middle School Teaching Team each year. I also wanted to thank the Level Leaders that I have worked with, laughed with, and created wonderful memories with. The Level Leaders are passionate about their role and the contributions that they make. I have become a better leader for working with our school Leadership Team. I firmly believe that the teachers and LSOs at Resurrection are second to none, and I thank them for the friendships I have made over the years that will continue as we go in different directions, but we will continue to keep in touch!

To our amazing families, who do so much for their children: thank you for the incredible support, kindness, and dedication you’ve shown. The strength of the Resurrection community has always come from your love, involvement, and belief in the power of education. It’s been a true privilege to walk alongside you on this journey.

To our incredible students, including the 2025 class of 3C. I have absolutely loved each and every moment of teaching you! Our students at Resurrection are without the doubt the kindest, compassionate and most inclusive group of students I have had the privilege to work with. I have no doubt that over the years I have taught future footballers, doctors, nurses and even a few teachers. Please keep the school values of being respectful, responsible and resilient with you at all times, and I am sure you will all go far in the future!

I wish you all nothing but the absolute best for the future!!! I leave Resurrection with amazing memories that I will take with me throughout the rest of my career!!

SUNDAY GOSPEL

This Sunday’s reading is from the Holy Gospel according to John 14:23-29

The Holy Spirit will teach you everything and remind you of all i have said

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘If anyone loves me he will keep my word,

and my Father will love him,

and we shall come to him

and make our home with him.

Those who do not love me do not keep my words.

And my word is not my own:

it is the word of the one who sent me.

I have said these things to you

while still with you;

but the Advocate, the Holy Spirit,

whom the Father will send in my name,

will teach you everything

and remind you of all I have said to you.

Peace I bequeath to you,

my own peace I give you,

a peace the world cannot give, this is my gift to you.

Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.

You heard me say:

I am going away, and shall return.

If you loved me you would have been glad to know that I am going to the Father,

for the Father is greater than I.

I have told you this now before it happens,

so that when it does happen you may believe.’

Gospel Reflection

Just like last week’s gospel, this passage also comes from the Last Supper discourse in the Gospel of John. Again, although its original context was pre-crucifixion, the language works in the post-resurrection Easter season as we anticipate the celebration of the Ascension next week. This double purpose language is, of course, no accident. The gospel was written 60 or more years after the death and resurrection of Jesus and so the writer was consciously conveying the double meaning of ‘going away’: Jesus going to his death; and Jesus going back to the Father. But Jesus also promises his return in this speech. Continuing the double meaning, the gospel writer knew that Jesus had come good on his promise to return after his death and so conveys to the gospel audience, and to us, a sense of confidence and hope that the second promised return will also be fulfilled at the right time.

In the meantime, Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit to the disciples and to the world. The Holy Spirit is to be the Advocate (the Paraclete) of the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit performs a dual purpose: firstly, to carry on the teaching; and secondly, to continue to remind the believers of all that Jesus said and did. The action of the Holy Spirit continues in the world today – inspiring and teaching those who are open to hearing and keeping alive the memory of Jesus, his teaching and his compassion. We talk about being full of school spirit and team spirit but these feelings of loyalty and commitment are only a distant echo of what it is to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Historical Context - The time of absense

At the time of writing of the Gospel of John (during the last decade of the 1st Century), the community of believers were beginning to come to terms with the continued absence of Jesus. In the earlier gospels, particularly Mark, there is a feeling of expectation evident in the writing – an expectation that Jesus’ promised return was imminent. By the time of John’s community, there was an acceptance that the glorious return of Jesus still lay some time in the future. They wrestled with keeping alive the memory and message of Jesus when there was no end in sight.

Gospel Focus - Advocate

In the text, Jesus describes the Holy Spirit as the Advocate, sometimes translated as Paraclete. Both words have very similar meanings. Today when we describe someone as an advocate we usually mean that they stand up for and speak out for someone else or a particular cause. Advocate also has a legal meaning where the advocate bears witness and attests to the validity of another. The Holy Spirit is the Advocate of Jesus in that the action of the Holy Spirit continues to bear witness to the message of Jesus.

Parish News

Parish Office Car Park

We kindly ask for your cooperation in ensuring the safety of all students during school pick-up times.

Recently, there was a near-miss incident where a child was almost struck by a vehicle in the Parish Office car park. To prevent future risks, we urge parents not to park in this area when collecting their children.

Your support in following this request will help maintain a safe environment for our students. Please use designated parking area via gate 1 to ensure the well-being of all children.

Sacramental Journey - First Eucharist

The First Eucharist will be held during the weekend masses on June 7th & 8th, 14th & 15th & 21st & 22nd.

There will be reserved seating for the First Communicates and their family.

Please keep these children in your prayers as they prepare for this important milestone.

.

Uganda

We are pleased to share that Fr Gerard, Melanie, and Rachael will be traveling to Uganda this July. This journey will be a special opportunity for them to meet the children we sponsor, connect with their families, and work alongside local community groups to offer support and encouragement.

Our visit is a continuation of our parish’s commitment to fostering relationships and providing assistance where it is most needed.

Through our time in Uganda, we will be engaging with the children, parents, and broader community to strengthen bonds and make a meaningful difference.

We ask that you keep us in your prayers as we embark on this important mission. May our travels be safe, our work be fruitful, and our presence be a source of hope and joy.
