Term 2 Week 5 of 10

Friday, 22nd May 2026

Message from the Principal

During the last few weeks, I have been conducting school tours. Most have been for Year Prep 2027, but some tours have been also for other year levels.

It’s wonderful to walk around our school and see it through the eyes of prospective parents. As I conduct the tours, I notice many things that make me proud. Some have been here a long time, and others are new to our school. These tours are just a normal reflection of a day at our school.

I thought I’d share what I saw on one day:

  • Teachers and LSO’s have great working relationships with students. Relationships built on mutual respect

  • Colourful and organised classrooms

  • Students following our PBL routines and teachers creating a sense of positivity about this

  • Lots of support for our students. Not just from the classroom teachers but also LSO’S, reading support teachers, our speech pathologist, a social skills class, sport, visual arts, performing arts, Japanese and STEM

  • A class preparing for their Mass later in the afternoon

  • Structured synthetic phonics teaching to support reading

  • Support for students in maths

  • Leaders supporting children who may have been struggling that day

  • Our office staff helping families fill in paperwork or needing information

  • Our Parish Priest meeting with a class to talk about an upcoming Mass

Early next term we will complete the focus of organising our prep numbers for 2027. If you are one of our families and you have a child beginning Prep next year, please make sure you see the office and fill out an enrolment form, so we make sure you have a spot.

As you would know from the last newsletter. Today is my last day of work for this Term as I am on Long Service Leave. Matt Dalton will be acting principal, and Marie Dorazio will be acting deputy principal.

I wish you all well and see you at the beginning of Term 3.

Best wishes

Wellbeing, Child Safety & Community Leader

Here are some more MINDFUL MAY ideas for you to do. It’s important you look after yourself so you are able to care for your family.

Learning Diversity

Last Friday, Katrina Griffiths and I visited Northern School for Autism. It was incredibly affirming to observe the strong procedures, supports, and understanding surrounding Autism-related behaviours and communication, particularly and to review/reflect on how these may look in a mainstream educational setting.

During the visit, we revisited the concept of executive functioning and the importance of proactive strategies to support students. We discussed how challenging the concept of time can be for many autistic students, as well as the difficulties associated with transitions — both transitioning to and from preferred activities and moving between different environments or settings.

We also explored the value of interest-based activities in supporting engagement and participation. A strong focus was placed on fostering independence and trust through the use of visual supports rather than relying solely on adult prompting, helping to create predictability and reduce anxiety for students.

Another key discussion point was reducing cognitive load by removing or adapting tasks that students may find particularly challenging. We also reflected on the significant influence that basic needs such as sleep, hunger, and thirst can have on student behaviour, and the importance of ensuring these needs are consistently met to support regulation and learning.

We are looking forward to further supporting children through the use of social scripts to strengthen communication skills, particularly around functional communication such as asking for help, expressing needs, and navigating everyday social interactions with greater confidence and independence.

Religious Education

On Tuesday, 19 May, our Grade Six families gathered for their Confirmation formation meeting with Fr Luke Bulley. This evening offered families a meaningful pause in the busyness of school life, a chance to reflect, reconnect, and walk more intentionally with their children on their journey toward the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Fr Luke invited parents and students to look more deeply into the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, exploring how these gifts are not just symbols learned in class but living strengths that guide us in everyday life. Through conversation, reflection, and shared prayer, families were encouraged to recognise how the Holy Spirit is already at work in their homes, relationships, and choices.

The session helped students form a deeper connection with the Holy Spirit, preparing their hearts and minds for this important step in their faith journey. It was also a valuable opportunity for families to grow together in understanding, support, and faith.

As we move closer to the celebration of Confirmation, we keep our grade Six students in our prayers, asking that the Holy Spirit continue to inspire them with wisdom, courage, and joy.

SUNDAY GOSPEL

Pentecost Sunday John 20:19-23

We Reflect

Pentecost celebrates the fullness of the Spirit and the great gathering of nations. It brings the Easter season to its conclusion. The Risen Lord has been exalted to his rightful place next to God and he has sent his Spirit to fill the earth with God's power. The world is charged with divine energy; it needs but a spark to ignite it with life and with excitement. This vitality explodes into the extraordinary. Tongues are loosed and speech overflows its linguistic constraints; charismatic gifts flood the valleys of human habitation; barred doors are burst open and frightened hearts are calmed. The Spirit of the Lord fills the whole world.

Once again we gather together for one reason, only to discover that God has gathered us for another. Through the Spirit of God, we are reconciled to each other and then together we spend ourselves for the common good. Through the Spirit of God the world is renewed, the community is revitalised, and we come to know the mysterious yet all pervasive peace of Christ.

The Spirit has been poured forth and works wonders wherever human hearts are open to its promptings. The earth is renewed each time rivalries are resolved, distinctions are recognised as merely expressions of diversity, peace is restored, comfort and solace are offered, and forgiveness is granted. We are immersed in the vigour of the Spirit of God. All we have to do is open ourselves to it and the reign of God will be born in our midst.

REFLECTION by Dianne Bergant CSA

We Read

In the evening of the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, ‘Peace be with you’, and showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy when they saw the Lord, and he said to them again, ‘Peace be with you.

‘As the Father sent me,

so am I sending you.’

After saying this he breathed on them and said:

‘Receive the Holy Spirit.

For those whose sins you forgive,

they are forgiven:

for those whose sins you retain,

they are retained.’

Praise to You Lord Jesus Christ

50th Jubilee – Upcoming Events

Thank you to everyone who attended the parish Jubilee Dinner Dance last Saturday. The evening was a wonderful success, filled with joy, community spirit, and gratitude for our 50 years as a parish family.

We will continue our celebration at the 10.30am Mass this Sunday, followed by activities and light refreshments in the hall, and everyone is welcome to join us. As we give thanks for this milestone, we recall the words of Scripture:

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24.

Brimbank Council - Congratulations Resurrection Catholic Parish on 50 fruitful years

The Council formally congratulates and recognises Resurrection Catholic Parish, located at 51 Gum Road, Kings Park, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary of service to the local community.

For over five decades, Resurrection Catholic Parish has played a significant and enduring role in supporting the social cohesion, wellbeing and multicultural fabric of the Brimbank community, particularly in Kings Park and St Albans West. From its foundation, the parish was established with a strong commitment to inclusion, welcome and community participation, especially for migrant and newly arrived families who were settling in Melbourne’s west following post war migration.

Resurrection Catholic Parish has consistently provided spaces and programs that extend beyond worship, including:

• Welcoming, Safe and supported community Resurrection’s ‘We Care’ purpose has fostered belonging among the people of Brimbank and has contributed to Brimbank’s identity as a diverse and inclusive municipality including gathering together many nationalities and working us one including Australian, Maltese, Croatian, Macedonian, Filipino, Samoan, Vietnamese, South Sudanese, Iraqi communities to name a few.

• Places and Spaces – liveable, connected neighbourhoods Since 1976, Resurrection Parish has worked to establish and maintain shared community spaces that have been used not only for mass but also for meetings, cultural celebrations, performances like the annual Resurrection Amateur Theatrical Society’s plays and musicals, playgroups and community gatherings. The multipurpose hall and grounds have also been used for community fetes and is currently the venue for the daughters of the West program for its first ever Filipino cohort.

• Education and youth development Through the establishment of Resurrection Catholic Primary school in 1981 and partnership with the Catholic Regional Colleges, Resurrection has supported thousands of local children and their families over generations.

• Community outreach and social support, including assistance to vulnerable families, seniors, and those experiencing hardship, notably through parish-based St Vincent de Paul activities and other local support initiatives. Resurrection also ran their Step-Up program which provided help and training for those looking for work, wanting to improve their interview skills and help with their resumes. With an active Seniors group, Men’s group, Women of the Word group and Young Adult group to name a few, Resurrection parishioners volunteer their time to help strengthen community connections for all ages and backgrounds.

On its 50th anniversary, this milestone is a fitting opportunity for Brimbank City Council to acknowledge and congratulate Resurrection Catholic Parish for its sustained service, positive community impact and commitment to bringing people together in a spirit of welcome, respect and shared responsibility.
