Term 3 Week 6 of 9

Friday, 29th August 2025

Message from the Principal

Dear parents/carers,

Term 3 2025 is well underway and moving quickly. Time really flies. Last week along with 1700 other Catholic leaders I went to the Australian Catholic Education Conference in Cairns. It was a wonderful learning experience.

One particular highlight was a beautiful Mass in the large auditorium in the Cairns exhibition Centre. The choir was from local schools and an amazing school from Thursday Island in the Torres Strait Islands of far north Queensland. They also performed and spoke and gave us a wonderful insight into their culture and their faith.

The conference itself was a great opportunity for me to hear the latest in faith education and education in general. Much of the information was really confirming what we are doing at Resurrection and some of it was important to hear as we strive to continually get better. It was great to learn from the experts as well as other principals throughout Australia. The only sad part was that I missed the wonderful Book Week Parade and the enjoyment that our community had celebrating this.

This week I got to see our Year 6 students dressed up for the Year 6 production coming up on September 17 and 18. They look fantastic. Thanks to Jody Banks and her wonderful group of staff, parents and other volunteers for making this happen.

This Saturday and the following Saturday our Year 6 students and students from the Parish will be being confirmed. I look forward to being there with our students and their families for this wonderful sacrament of Confirmation as they continue their growth as Catholics. We did have a school/parish Mass for this August 31; this mass has been postponed due to the commitments around Confirmation.

We’re thrilled to announce that all students graduating Year 6 in 2026 will be gifted a commemorative Graduation Polo Top to celebrate their final year at primary school. This special keepsake is a tradition we’re proud to continue, and we hope it will be worn with pride throughout their final year and beyond.

To ensure every student receives the correct size, we’ll be arranging fitting sessions for all current Grade 5 students in the coming weeks. Sample tops will be available for students to try on during school hours, and staff will assist in recording each student’s preferred fit.

This initiative is our way of recognising the journey each student has taken and the exciting transition ahead. We look forward to seeing our 2026 graduates wearing their polos with pride as they lead the school in their final year.

Best wishes,

Deputy Principal: Learning & Organisation

Book Week - Photos

Check out some wonderful photos from our Book Week Parade in Week 6 - it is definitely one of the best days of the year! Our students and staff take this special event very seriously as you can see! What an incredible celebration of literacy and reading. Thanks so much to everyone for getting involved in this special day.

MACSIS Survey

Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools – School Improvement Surveys (MACSSIS): Monday 1 September – Friday 19 September 2025. Throughout each year, we pause to listen to our students, families and staff to gauge how our learning community is traveling. This feedback is invaluable to our progress as effective school communities and is backed by evidence-based research and best practices.

A significant and formal way in which we engage and gather data is through MACSSIS, the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools – School Improvement Surveys. MACSSIS is a set of surveys that have been built specifically for Catholic schools in Melbourne by the Learning Services team at MACS, in partnership with researchers at Learning First and in wide consultation with principals in our schools.

In 2025, students, families and staff are invited to participate in MACSSIS via our secure and purpose-built online platform. The online platform is where our school leaders will access the summary reports that visualise the results of the student, family and staff surveys.

The MACSSIS survey platform is operated by an independent supplier, ORIMA Research Pty Ltd. The platform meets with the high security and privacy standards for handling student and school data. Participating schools are in the process of updating their privacy policy to ensure school communities are fully informed and protected.

Students at our school will be provided with supervised sessions, where teachers are on hand to help and answer any questions. Families and staff can complete the survey anytime over the three-week window via an emailed link and password. Feedback has indicated that previous surveys were completed across a range of mobile devices and different web browsers. Our community’s opinions are critical to understanding how our school is performing – MACSSIS is a key data source for guiding the ongoing work to improve our school.

Throughout the next couple of weeks, you may receive an email and a special code if you have been randomly selected to participate in the MACSIS survey here at Resurrection. All participation is invited, welcomed and 100 per cent voluntary. The surveys are not a test; they are an inclusive way to support the work we are already doing to improve our school. Everyone has the right to refuse to participate, or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during or after completion of the survey.

Please notify the office if your child does not wish to participate. If you would like more information, please contact the school.

Father’s Day Event

We are teaching our students a strategy called …

  NAME IT

'NAMING IT' is about standing up for yourself in a SMART way

BREAK THE SILENCE

How does it work?

1. Tell the person to stop it, what they are doing and how you feel!

"Stop it, I don't like it when you call me a dork, it hurts my feelings, and it makes me feel sad."

Use "I statements" like "I don't like what you're doing".

 GET SUPPORT - STAY CALM

2. If the person does it again, tell them to stop and tell them that you are going to NAME IT to a teacher or another adult.

DON'T GIVE UP -STAY CALM

3. "Name It" to the teacher or adult

Let them know that it is important and tell them what you have already tried.

DONT GIVE UP - KEEP NAMING IT

If you are not listened to, find a trusted adult who will LISTEN to you. If you are scared, get an adult to support you and 'NAME IT' again.

Everyone is responsible for naming it.

Using violence won't stop violence. Keep NAMING IT until it stops!

Learning Diversity

It’s always a pleasure to connect with you and discuss your child’s learning journey.

Over the coming weeks, we will continue to hold PSG meetings for students identified under the Substantial and Extensive categories of NCCD funding.

Please also keep an eye out for your child’s PLP. As always, you will receive two copies—one to keep and one to sign and return for our records.

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in your child’s education.

A big thank you to all the students that participated from National Science Week (9-17 August)

We had an amazing time building with Legos, coding with Spheros and Beebots and playing with kinetic sand, magnets, robots and engineering games during break times.

We are excited to announce that we will be holding our Colour Run this term.

The event will be held on Friday 10th October at 2:10pm on the School Oval

In Week 5 students received their sponsorship booklets and information about how to create their ‘My Profile Page” to create an online profile. We encourage you to share their page to family and friends to receive online donations.

'Students only need to raise $10 to receive an incentive prize, from there they can win more and more as their fundraising total gets higher and higher!

Here are some of the prizes that you might be able to claim:

If students don't want to receive prizes and they would like to donate to a good cause they can choose to donate their money to one of the six causes to help either plant coral, plant trees, provide meals to those in need, provide reading support, protect turtles or help end bullying in schools.

The donations raised will be going towards new and exciting resources for our school!

We can’t wait to get colourful with you all! Have a look at this link of what to look forward to!

Sacrament of Confirmation

Please pray for our Confirmation Candidates who will be confirmed over the weekend:

Two weeks ago, our Year 6 students participated in a ‘Confirmation Preparation Day’ which included a visit from Bishop Martin as well as a workshop led by Michael McGirrr from Caritas Australia. During the morning session, students reflected on the Sacrament of Confirmation in the church.

Here are some words on ‘why God has given us the gift of the Sacrament of Confirmation’ formulated by our Year 6 students:

“...because Jesus wants us to live a good life and to go to heaven with him”

“...so we can preach about the word of God to others who they can unite with God again”

“...because God wants us to grow in our own faith, seal our faith, and continue to live out our Catholic faith”

“...because He loves us dearly and wants us to have the Holy Spirit so we know He is with us always”

As we celebrate our Confirmation candidates over the next two weekends, we too reflect on how we have continued to keep the fire of our own Sacrament of Confirmation alive today.

In Faith,

Art show- ‘Harmony’ theme Logo Winner

The school has been buzzing with excitement and anticipation as to whose artwork will help advertise our upcoming art show. The choice was so difficult as we had such a large amount of high quality entries. Firstly, a big thank you to each and every one of you who took the time to create and submit your masterpieces!

Eventually it was narrowed down to SIX (which is one more than previous years) logos who not only matched the success criteria but also added their own flair to their design. After that the process was to get the Art Show Committee to vote on their favourite design which leads us to the winner…

A massive congratulations to Andre 6C, his design was unique, colourful and encapsulates everything we love about art!

“My logo represents the harmony that arts and culture can promote. I represented harmony with people and their various flags to show that we can all work together side-by-side… The other elements symbolise unity and peace [such as the dove] that can be one in spirit…This logo is special to me because I have poured my heart and soul into creating this, it is by far my best drawing [yet] I hope to win so that I can remember this [for a long time to come]. - Andre C 6C

We would also like to give an honorable mention to our top five runner ups for their entries, unfortunately you didn’t make it this year but we look forward to seeing what you produce for our next art show!

Alekandr 1C - Jenny 1B - Hannah 4B - Vihaan 5B - Kohoe, Rayden, David 6A -

The winner and runner’s up will receive a prize at the following assemblies (Week 7 and 8) and their work will be on display in the artroom.

Many thanks,

It was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic participants at our annual Spelling Bee last week, held as part of our Book Week 2025 celebrations. The event brought together students from across the Junior, Middle, and Senior schools—and this year’s competitors did not disappoint!

From the very first round, it became clear that our students had come well-prepared. In fact, they were quite the spellers, with the word difficulty having to be ramped quite quickly!

All students participated in the first round of the Spelling Bee with 20 Junior School students, 18 Middle School students and 20 Senior School students making it through to the final round!

Some of the most challenging words, like conscientious and metamorphosis, even made our top Senior School spellers pause, but they showed incredible resilience and perseverance to the very end.

A big thank you to all the students and teachers who supported the students on the day.

Congratulations to everyone who participated—you made this year’s Spelling Bee a memorable highlight of Book Week 2025! Bzzzzzzzzzzz!!

SUNDAY GOSPEL

Twentieth Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C

We reflect:

If we go to the theatre, we are often asked if want VIP or premier seats and if we do want to sit in the most comfortable seats, it will cost us extra. Wealthy people / celebrities do not choose to sit at the back. They always sit where they will be seen, heard and noticed.

In the gospel, Jesus very clearly warns us about this attitude of self –importance. Being a follower of Jesus is not about power, prestige or demanding the best seats in the house (or the church). In God’s eyes, we are all invited to the table of the Lord as equals.

Being a follower of Jesus is about humility. This is not to be confused with weakness or meekness. Humility speaks of an inner quality of recognising and appreciating who we are, the place of God in our lives and our relationship to other people.

Jesus  is our host who gently calls us to deepen our friendship with him and each other. Every time we accept his most generous invitation, he seats us at his ‘place of honour.’

Each time we celebrate the Eucharist, we are not only fed and nourished ourselves, we are also called to share the richness of God’s life by reaching out to others, especially those in need. We sit at the table with Jesus so we can be generous and gracious to others. This week, whose needs can I put before my own? Who can I serve this week?

We read:   Luke 14:1,7-14

On a sabbath day Jesus had gone for a meal to the house of one of the leading Pharisees; and they watched him closely. He then told the guests a parable, because he had noticed how they picked the places of honour. He said this,

‘When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take your seat in the place of honour. A more distinguished person than you may have been invited, and the person who invited you both may come and say, “Give up your place to this man.” And then, to your

embarrassment, you would have to go and take the lowest place.

No; when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there, so that, when your host comes, he may say, “My friend, move up higher.” In that way, everyone with you at the table will see you honoured. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the man who humbles himself will be exalted.

Then he said to his host, ‘When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not ask your friends, brothers, relations or rich neighbours, for fear they repay your courtesy by inviting you in return. No; when you have a party, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; that they cannot pay you back means that you are fortunate, because repayment will be made to you when the virtuous rise again.’

The Gospel of the Lord

Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ

✨ Welcome Home, Fr Gerard! ✨

After 7.5 weeks away, we are overjoyed to welcome back Fr Gerard

His journey to Uganda was nothing short of transformative. One of the most memorable milestones of the trip was the official opening of Resurrection Vocational Secondary School, a light of hope and opportunity for the young minds of the region.

Fr Gerard had the privilege of meeting the wonderful students and dedicated teachers who are now part of this vibrant learning community. Their warmth, resilience, and dreams for a better future left a deep impression on him, and soon, he’ll be sharing those stories with us all.

We look forward to hearing Fr Gerard’s reflections, photos, and the unforgettable moments that shaped his time abroad. His stories will remind us that we are united by faith, hope, and the power of community.
