Term 1 Week 9 of 10

Friday, 27th March 2026

Message from the Principal

Dear parents and carers,

Last week we, along with the whole Archdiocese of Melbourne, celebrated Catholic Education Week. Catholic Education Week is a time to celebrate Catholic schooling and to thank God for the wonderful opportunities Catholic education provides to our families and the wider community.

This year’s theme celebrates the significance of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of our local Church in Melbourne:

Christ beside me: Walking in the footsteps of Saint Patrick.

Within the school, various activities were done within classes to celebrate - examples of this work will be shown within this Newsletter. We then ended the week at St. Patrick’s Cathedral for ‘The Mass of St Patrick for Schools’, where we were joined by representatives from all schools in the Archdiocese. Every year it proves to be a remarkable Mass and this year was again no different. It was celebrated by Archbishop Peter Comensoli and concelebrated by various priests from around the Archdiocese including our very own, Fr. Gerard, who also brought Fr. Nestus to experience the wider church here in the Archdiocese.

Here are some recounts from some of our student leaders who attended the Mass on behalf our school:

In the morning we got ready for an exciting day ahead of us because we were going to St. Patrick's Cathedral. We gathered together at the entrance of Resurrection and got split into 2 groups and excitingly made our way to the Cathedral. When we got there, at the entrance of the Cathedral the School Captains with their banner hurriedly lined up with the other schools while the Faith and Life, Sustainability & Environment and Social Justice student leaders calmly sat down on the pews. As the School Captains confidently walked down the aisle towards the altar, the Mass began. Archbishop Peter Commensoli and all the Priests in the area including Father Gerard and Father Nestus came to celebrate St Patrick's day. After the Mass the schools gathered in the park and had a picnic while rock music from a concert was playing. We played volleyball and soccer with a couple other schools which was fun. We unfortunately had to leave and made our way to the school. We had such an amazing time. We got back to Resurrection and were happy we made it back safe.

Our trip to Saint Patrick's Cathedral to attend a mass with other Catholic schools from around Melbourne

As soon as we walked in with the School Captains holding the school banner, the atmosphere changed into a sacred mood. The School Captains sat down to the side on plastic chairs as a man and woman played the bagpipes; The rest of the leaders, Mrs Aclan, Mr Dalton and Mr Glasby sat on the pews near the main entrance. Archbishop Peter Commensoli, other Bishops and Priests, including Father Gerard and Father Nestus entered in. There were many choirs and bands, with harps, trumpets, violins, cellos and many other instruments. Emma 6A & Hannah 5A

Best wishes

Deputy Principal

Over the past weeks, I have spoken about the professional development that is provided to our staff in literacy and numeracy. By providing evidence based, knowledge rich professional development to our staff, it allows our staff to further adapt their teaching to suit the diverse needs of our children.

Religious Education is no different. Our school aims to offer our students a curriculum in which they are able to explore the Catholic faith from different lenses, offering the basis of the truth of our Faith, but journeyed to and experienced in their own unique way.

Erica Aclan has been busy providing professional development and upskilling out staff to make the study of Resurrection receive the most enriching and engaging learning experience they can receive. Two examples of this are:

The Mass

Using a small scale replica of a Church, Erica explored the significance of items commonly used during a Mass e.g. Altar, tabernacle, ciborium, paten, lectern etc. Every item, every response, every colour has a deep significance based on scripture and tradition.

Extraordinary Ministers

Erica led a training session for a select few members of staff to become Extraordinary Ministers of Communion. Assisting to distribute Holy Communion during Mass is one of the highest honours that a person can do.  We are truly grateful that our parish invites us to help serve in this capacity.

Thank you Erica for your deep knowledge and passion towards Religious Education.

Reminder: Tuesday 2nd of April (Holy Thursday) is the last day of term 1. Students will be dismissed at 3:15pm.

Easter Hampers

The fundraising committee are asking all students to bring in donations of the following items:

●     Chocolate Easter Eggs

●     Hampers or Baskets

●     Ribbons / Cellophane

●     Anything else Easter related!

We are asking students to bring these items into school by Friday 27th March. The donations can be given to your child’s classroom teacher or the front office. The raffle will be drawn on 2nd April 2026. We have made buying the raffle tickets easier. You can do it by this link. It's $1 per ticket. Money raised will go towards more sports equipment for our students.

Also, tickets will be sold before and after school next week! So bring that extra change and purchase your tickets.

Use of Hall Toilets After School

To support our child‑safety guidelines, we need to remind all families about the appropriate use of the hall toilets before and after school.

Before School Pickup

Some parents are arriving early while PE classes are still running in the hall. During this time, students are actively using the hall and have access to the toilets. To maintain a safe and supervised environment, we ask that parents do not enter the hall or use the hall toilets before the school day has officially ended.

After School – OSHClub Hours

Once OSHClub begins, the hall toilets become part of the supervised OSHClub environment. For child‑safety reasons, these toilets must remain exclusively for children attending after‑school care.We ask all families to avoid using the hall toilets after school to ensure OSHClub staff can maintain clear supervision and meet required safety standards.

Learning Diversity

Dear Parents and Carers,

It was so lovely to see so many of you over the past week. One of the things I value most about our school community is how supportive and engaged you are in your child’s learning. Your partnership with us is incredibly important, and we feel privileged to play a part in your child’s educational journey.

I would also like to remind you that we will shortly be rolling out Personalised Learning Plans digitally. These will be sent to your email and will require your digital signature via Adobe. So please keep an eye out for this and check your junkfolders.

Thank you for your continued support.

Our wonderful Prep team has recently introduced a new phonemic awareness program called Heggerty as part of their daily morning literacy routine, to run alongside our Sounds-Write phonics program.

Heggerty is a widely used, research-based literacy program that focuses on short 10-minute daily oral lessons designed to strengthen phonemic awareness and early literacy skills. The lessons include rhyming, sound isolation, blending, segmenting and sound manipulation, with the use of hand motions to support engagement and learning.

Our Prep students have been doing a wonderful job engaging in the learning so far, and we can’t wait to see the progress they make throughout the year as they continue building strong foundations for becoming successful readers.

UKULELE FUN!

In Performing Arts lessons this term, Years 3-6 students have been learning how to play the ukulele as part of the school's music program. Students have been learning how to hold the instrument correctly, play with a plectrum, play individual strings, strum a variety of rhythmic patterns and even learn some basic chords! It has been wonderful to observe our students playing their instruments with such musicality, developing many skills that a musician requires when playing in a music ensemble. We have also had a few of our Senior students demonstrate their guitar playing skills! What amazingly talented music students we have here at Resurrection!

Praying you and your loved ones have a safe and holy Easter ahead ❤︎

SUNDAY GOSPEL

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion

Jesus stood before the governor, Pontius Pilate, who questioned him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"

Jesus said, "You say so." And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders,

he made no answer. Then Pilate said to him, "Do you not hear how many things they are testifying against you?" But he did not answer him one word, so that the governor was greatly amazed.

Now on the occasion of the feast the governor was accustomed to release to the crowd one prisoner whom they wished. And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. So when they had assembled, Pilate said to them, "Which one do you want me to release to you, Barabbas, or Jesus called Christ?" For he knew that it was out of envy that they had handed him over. While he was still seated on the bench, his wife sent him a message, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man.

I suffered much in a dream today because of him." The chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas but to destroy Jesus. The governor said to them in reply, "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?"  They answered, "Barabbas!" Pilate said to them,  "Then what shall I do with Jesus called Christ?" They all said, "Let him be crucified!"  But he said, "Why? What evil has he done?"  They only shouted the louder, "Let him be crucified!"  When Pilate saw that he was not  succeeding at all, but that a riot was breaking out instead, he took water and washed his hands in the sight of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this man's blood. Look to it yourselves."  And the whole people said in reply, "His blood be upon us and upon our children."  Then he released Barabbas to them, but after he had Jesus scourged, he handed him over to be crucified.

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus inside the praetorium and gathered the whole cohort around him. They stripped off his clothes and threw a scarlet military cloak about him. Weaving a crown out of thorns, they placed it on his head,  and a reed in his right hand.  And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"  They spat upon him and took the reed and kept striking him on the head. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, and led him off to crucify him.

As they were going out, they met a Cyrenian named Simon; this man they pressed into service to carry his cross. And when they came to a place called Golgotha — which means Place of the Skull —,

they gave Jesus wine to drink mixed with gall.  But when he had tasted it, he refused to drink.

After they had crucified him, they divided his garments by casting lots; then they sat down and kept watch over him there. And they placed over his head the written charge against him: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews. Two revolutionaries were crucified with him, one on his right and the other on his left.

Those passing by reviled him, shaking their heads and saying, "You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself, if you are the Son of God,  and come down from the cross!"

Likewise the chief priests with the scribes and elders mocked him and said,  "He saved others; he cannot save himself. So he is the king of Israel!  Let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. He trusted in God;  let him deliver him now if he wants him. For he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"  The revolutionaries who were crucified with him also kept abusing him in the same way.

From noon onward, darkness came over the whole land  until three in the afternoon. And about three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?"  which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"  Some of the bystanders who heard it said, "This one is calling for Elijah."

mmediately one of them ran to get a sponge;  he soaked it in wine, and putting it on a reed, gave it to him to drink. But the rest said, 'Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to save him." But Jesus cried out again in a loud voice, and gave up his spirit. Here all kneel and pause for a short time.

And behold, the veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked, rocks were split, tombs were opened, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised. And coming forth from their tombs after his resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many.

The centurion and the men with him who were keeping watch over Jesus feared greatly when they saw the earthquake and all that was happening, and they said, "Truly, this was the Son of God!"
